What became clearer before signing

Client accounts from internship and trainee agreement assessment consultations in Germany.

A compulsory placement with an extra commitment

Nora’s university required a five-month practical semester in Hesse. Her agreement also referred to optional work beyond the placement dates and a separate confidentiality schedule. During the assessment, we kept the university requirement distinct from the employer’s additional wording. Her issue list focused on supervision, the exact end date and whether any duties were expected after the credited semester.

“I had been treating every page as one university requirement. The consultation showed which parts came from my course and which were the company’s choices. I could ask the faculty and employer different questions.” — Nora, engineering student

A trainee offer and repayment wording

Jonas received a twelve-month commercial trainee agreement that named training events but also referred broadly to repayment of costs. The document did not state which events, amounts or circumstances would trigger repayment. Rather than predicting an outcome, we prepared questions about itemisation, timing and the employer’s policy attachment. He requested the missing policy before deciding.

“I wanted a yes-or-no verdict. The answer was less absolute: get the policy, identify the costs and then assess the wording. That restraint was mildly frustrating on the day, but it prevented me from arguing about a clause without the referenced document.” — Jonas, trainee applicant

Voices from shorter consultations

“My offer call was the next morning. The orientation checklist gave me natural wording for asking about weekly hours and supervision without sounding confrontational.” — Priya, master’s student

“The revised clause review was narrow, exactly as described. We compared the new notice paragraph with the first version and spent no time repeating points that had already been settled.” — Emil, graduate entrant

“As a parent reading a German agreement in translation, I had focused on salary. Anna brought the fixed term, holiday and training schedule into the same picture.” — Catherine, supporting a graduate relocating to Munich
